This highly original program proposes the creation of an imaginary Christmas Oratorio initially composed of works by 17th-century German composers.
Many of these works are previously unpublished and come from the extensive Düben Collection housed in the Uppsala University Library. All the pieces are arranged to evoke the main scenes of the Nativity story: the principal figures are represented—Mary, Joseph, the Archangel Gabriel, the angels, the shepherds, the Magi, and Simeon. They appear in compositions belonging to the genre of sacred narratives, from the dialogue of the Annunciation between the Archangel Gabriel and Mary, to the scene where Mary and Joseph search for Jesus in the Temple, and including the arrival of the Magi led to the manger by angels.
In contrast to these narrative scenes, large ensembles evoke the crowd of angels and shepherds, the adoration of the crowd before the manger… The instruments play an important role in this festive celebration and bring contrasting colours.
