The more we explore the German repertoire of the 17th century, the more we realize its importance in the formation of Johann Sebastian Bach.
His work is indeed the legacy of a long stylistic journey whose foundations appear in the compositions of the early 17th-century masters, primarily Heinrich Schütz, who throughout his life continued to be a model for the next generation.
It was during this same period, disrupted by the Thirty Years' War, that the Bach family flourished in Thuringia, some of whose scores have been preserved, including those of Johann Christoph, a great cousin of Johann Sebastian, whom the latter considered a "profound composer".
This program also allows us to explore composers like Dieterich Buxtehude, with whom the young Bach may have trained, and to discover those who, like Johann Schelle, preceded him in Leipzig. This journey concludes with Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata Widerstehe doch der Sünde BWV 54.
