In the sacred repertoire of the 18th century, alongside Pergolesi's famous Stabat Mater, one can find several other compositions that evoke the drama witnessed by the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross.
At the threshold of Gospel narrative and endowed with a particularly moving theatricality, is the Pianto di Maria by Giovanni Battista Ferrandini.
It was in the service of the Munich court that this Venetian spent his entire career. The sublime cantata was composed there in 1739. The work must have enjoyed well-deserved success, since various copies have been preserved, some from the late 18th century which, for reasons unknown, attributed it to George Frideric Handel!
The libretto presents the entire scene of Christ's Passion, but here, the central figure is the Virgin Mary, a grieving mother witnessing the drama unfolding before her eyes. False attributions are common in manuscripts of this period. This is the case with the Salve Regina in G minor, whose attribution to Giovanni Battista Pergolesi remains doubtful. And yet, this version of the Marian Antiphon deserves just as much renown as the authenticated works of the Neapolitan master.
