In Brescia, in the mid-16th century, the invention of the violin by luthiers such as Amati, Da Salo, and Maggini brought about a true revolution in musical life. With this perfect instrument, instrumental music took on a new dimension: the violin began to sing and move the listener, and like the voice, it soared into displays of virtuosity.
It was primarily in the cities of Northern Italy that a true tradition of virtuosos developed; they became ambassadors of their music in various countries; one need only mention Carlo Farina in Dresden or Biagio Marini in Brussels. From Mantua to Venice, this program spans the entire 17th century with compositions by Salomone Rossi, Francesco Cavalli, and Giovanni Legrenzi, and concludes with the trio sonata that Antonio Vivaldi, like his fellow Roman Corelli, wrote on the famous theme of La Folia. And since this Italian style truly swept across Europe, it is no surprise to find the Flemish composer Nicolas à Kempis or the English composer Henry Purcell among its members.
